Snake and Thorfinn continue their one-on-one, recognizing each other’s strengths. Thorfinn ends up hitting Snake a few times, while Snake cuts Thorfinn’s face once. The fight ends when Snake reaches Gardar’s side. Arnheid and Sverkel plead with Snake to let Gardar go, but Snake questions if Gardar’s life is worth more than his five men that died. Snake stabs Gardar in the chest. Shortly after, Gardar gets up and chokes Snake. Arnheid convinces Gardar to let go of Snake, telling him they should go home.
Gardar asks about Hjalti, and Arnheid lies by saying she left him with Gardar’s brother. Sverkel allows Gardar and Arnheid to use the cart, and they leave. While Gardar is dying, he sees his past life, the birth of Hjalti, and raising him. He also recalls his life as an enslaved person, a warrior, and leaving his family behind. Before dying, he tells Arnheid he’s never leaving their side again. As Arnheid mourns, the retainers arrive on their horses.
