“We’re heading North. There’s no dodging this.” Sony Pictures has revealed the official trailer for an action thriller survival movie called Hijack 1971, based on a true story of a flight in winter of 1971. It just opened in South Korea last week, and will also be opening in select US theaters starting next week – glad to see them finally releasing films the same time they open in other countries. Hijack 1971, also known as just Hijacking in Korean, depicts the story of people fighting for their lives in an extreme situation when a passenger plane is hijacked in the air space of Korea in 1971. Starring Ha Jung-woo as Tae-in, the first officer of the plane; Sung Dong-il as Gyu-sik, captain of the flight; Yeo Jin-goo as Yong-dae, the terrorist hijacker; and Chae Soo-bin as Lee Ok-soon, a flight attendant on the flight. The hijacker used homemade grenades on a twin prop plane, causing injuries including to one of the pilots – who still try their best to land the plane safely. Looks seriously intense, as one would expect a hijacking movie to look, though this does seem over-the-top.
Here’s the official US trailer (+ poster) for Kim Seong-han’s film Hijack 1971, direct from Sony’s YouTube:
In winter 1971, Sokcho Airport passenger plane pilots Tae-in (Ha Jung-woo) and Gyu-sik (Sung Dong-il) take a flight to Gimpo. Following the guidance of flight attendant Ok-sun (Chae Soo-bin), the passengers on board are busy for a while, but not long after takeoff, an improvised bomb explodes, turning the plane into chaos. “From now on, this plane is going north.” Yong-dae (Yeo Jin-goo), who is trying to hijack the entire plane, takes control of the cockpit and threatens to turn the plane to the north. Due to the impact of the explosion, Gyu-sik loses his eyesight in one side and Tae-in finds himself in a desperate situation on the chaotic plane. They begin a desperate struggle to land the plane safely. Hijack 1971, also known as 하이재킹 or Hijacking in Korean, is directed by Korean filmmaker Kim Seong-han, making his feature directorial debut with this film. The screenplay is by Kim Kyung-chan, based on a true story. Produced by Jung Won-chan, along with Perfect Storm Film & Channel Plus. This first opened in Korea in late June this year. Sony Pictures will debut Hijack 1971 in select US theaters starting on July 5th, 2024 coming soon. Interested?
