Summary

  • Grey’s Anatomy season 20 introduces Monica Beltran, a pediatric surgeon with a pragmatic and boundary-pushing attitude.
  • Monica’s interactions with Amelia Shepherd in the trailer hint at a potential romantic storyline between the two characters.
  • With the return of Arizona Robbins and a new addition like Monica, Grey’s Anatomy season 20 promises new dynamics and workplace romances.

The Grey’s Anatomy season 20 trailer featured the return of some old doctors, including Jessica Capshaw’s Arizona Robbins, but an interesting new character as well. Grey’s Anatomy season 20 will premiere on March 14, 2024 with a new addition to the cast. Two major Grey’s Anatomy characters exited in season 19 in Meredith Grey and Maggie Pierce, leaving room for new doctors to join the staff at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

The biggest talking points of the Grey’s Anatomy season 20 trailer are the returns of Arizona and Meredith, as well as Teddy’s potential fate after the Grey’s Anatomy season 19 ending. However, viewers also picked up on some romantic tension between the new doctor and another character who recently went through a breakup, leaving her available for a new love interest. Grey’s Anatomy season 20 only has 10 episodes to set up this new character, but if the medical drama has proven anything, it’s that there’s always room for a workplace romance.

Monica Beltran Is A Pediatric Surgeon

The newest Grey’s Anatomy character is Monica Beltran, played by Natalie Morales. Morales has a long television resume, which includes the shows White Collar, Parks and Recreation, Dead to Me, The Morning Show, and more. In Grey’s Anatomy season 20, she will be taking on the role of a pediatric surgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Grey’s Anatomy hasn’t had a main pediatric surgeon character since the respective exits of Alex Karev and Arizona Robbins. With Capshaw making a guest star appearance in the upcoming season, Arizona and Monica will likely cross paths. In a Deadline article, Morales’s character was described as a surgeon “whose pragmatism and level-headedness have made her one of the best in her field.” Monica is a boundary-pusher who aims to provide “top-quality care to her patients. These traits should make her fit in easily with the other Grey’s Anatomy doctors.

One of the most recent and controversial departures from Grey’s Anatomy was that of Alex Karev, and here’s why his goodbye wasn’t well-received.

Monica & Amelia Could Become A Couple

Instead of focusing on what Monica will bring to Grey’s Anatomy as a pediatric surgeon, her scenes in the season 20 trailer revolved around interactions with Amelia Shepherd, the head of neurosurgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. There seems to be instant tension between them, as Amelia cuts Monica off in the parking lot on her first day. Both of them appeared surprised but amused when they later ran into each other inside the hospital.

Amelia and her partner Kai broke up in Grey’s Anatomy season 19, meaning Amelia is single and likely looking to mingle, as she’s never been alone for too long in both this series and its spinoff, Private Practice. Kai was the first time Amelia’s love interests expanded past male characters, and Monica could be Amelia’s first girlfriend. With characters like Arizona, the longest-running lesbian on primetime television, Grey’s Anatomy has always prided itself on its representation, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Monica and Amelia got together in an enemies-to-lovers scenario.
