Monica Beltran Is A Pediatric Surgeon

The newest Grey’s Anatomy character is Monica Beltran, played by Natalie Morales. Morales has a long television resume, which includes the shows White Collar, Parks and Recreation, Dead to Me, The Morning Show, and more. In Grey’s Anatomy season 20, she will be taking on the role of a pediatric surgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Grey’s Anatomy hasn’t had a main pediatric surgeon character since the respective exits of Alex Karev and Arizona Robbins. With Capshaw making a guest star appearance in the upcoming season, Arizona and Monica will likely cross paths. In a Deadline article, Morales’s character was described as a surgeon “whose pragmatism and level-headedness have made her one of the best in her field.” Monica is a boundary-pusher who aims to provide “top-quality care” to her patients. These traits should make her fit in easily with the other Grey’s Anatomy doctors.

Monica & Amelia Could Become A Couple

Instead of focusing on what Monica will bring to Grey’s Anatomy as a pediatric surgeon, her scenes in the season 20 trailer revolved around interactions with Amelia Shepherd, the head of neurosurgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. There seems to be instant tension between them, as Amelia cuts Monica off in the parking lot on her first day. Both of them appeared surprised but amused when they later ran into each other inside the hospital.

Amelia and her partner Kai broke up in Grey’s Anatomy season 19, meaning Amelia is single and likely looking to mingle, as she’s never been alone for too long in both this series and its spinoff, Private Practice. Kai was the first time Amelia’s love interests expanded past male characters, and Monica could be Amelia’s first girlfriend. With characters like Arizona, the longest-running lesbian on primetime television, Grey’s Anatomy has always prided itself on its representation, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Monica and Amelia got together in an enemies-to-lovers scenario.
